Introduction
Throughout
the early history of the United States, a woman’s goal to attain a higher
education was a subject that was constantly frowned upon; it was unheard of and was quickly discarded. Many argued that
women cannot and should never be as highly educated and seen equal to men. It
was also believed that women had a lower mentality than man and would have
difficulties understanding the responsibilities of attaining any form of
an education. However, there arose a rare challenge in the 19th century
in which the educational equality between men and women began to emerge. Emma
Hart Willard, Ella Flagg Young and Mary McLeod Bethune arose and accepted that challenge. Little did society know that strong women would begin to emerge throughout the
entire United States, and the strength of these women would set off a chain of
events that would change the roles of Women’s education, rights and history forever!
This website was created as a project to demonstrate my knowledge of three extraordinary women who managed to accomplish the unthinkable in education during the 19th - 20th century. This website also focuses on the ratification of the 14th Amendment which was led by the Woman Suffrage; giving American women the right to VOTE!
